Alabama became the 22nd of
the 50 United States on December 14, 1819. It has been known as the
"Yellowhammer State" since the Civil War when a company of young
cavalry soldiers arrived at Hopkinsville, KY with fine, new uniforms
containing bits of bright yellow cloth. Alabama spans approximately
52,423 square miles between Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and
Tennessee.
